Will pressure washing work, if it wont, what will?

Friday, January 30th, 2009
Spike asked:

I was out last night with some friends, and we decided to mess with a teachers house for homecoming. I had some window chalk ((The paint type stuff)) and we put it on his garage door. We found out it was vinyl and the window chalk stained the garage door. Do you think pressure washing it will get it clean, if it wont, what chemicals would get it off. If we dont get it off, we have to buy him a new garage door for about $4,000.00. Thanks in advanced for the answers.

Caulking My double pane vinyl windows?

LedZep asked:

I am a new first time home owner in Seattle, WA. My heating bills this winter is quite a bit and I am thinking the culprit is my windows. I have double pane vinyl windows. But still my windows are quite cold when i touch ‘em from inside (assuming average winter temperature is around 40 F). Is this normal ? The caulking between the window frame and the wall is perfect and no leaks as I couldn’t feel any cold air. I could feel some cold air between the window sash and the glass. Can i use some transparent acrylic latext caulk and seal this small gap srond the glass? Will this affect and may be break my glass when the glass expands in summer? Thanks for your advice(s).

What are my options in changing my white vinyl window?

Susan asked:

We plan to add a new window to our house. A white vinyl window was ordered by mistake by a friend of ours who was trying to help. We have a Tudor style house with brown windows and trims. What are our options in changing the white vinyl window to brown? We were suggested to paint the vinyl, or take it to body shop. Will painting or spray paint work ? Any how to suggestions from those who have done it?

If I vinyl side my 120 year old home, can I keep the decorative wood surrounds of my sash windows?

debisbooked asked:

My three story 100 + year old victorian is sided with aluminum. Most of the windows are the original sash windows, about six feet long each with molded wood surrounds. I want to keep the surrounds and paint them but I am told that is not possible with vinyl siding. If this is true, what can I do to replace the ugly aluminum siding?

Does it make sense for me to replace the windows in my house?

Saturday, January 17th, 2009
lindee3000 asked:

Lived in house for 5 years. I have 3 double hung windows and 3 slider windows. Would like to move Spring 2009 if the house sells. Current windows are 30 years old with metal frames, front big double hung windows do not fit/operate correctly, one slider window leaks. I live in a loud neighborhood.

Should I replace all windows (and sliding glass door which I am doing for sure) for $4400 installed? Does this makes sense? Will it make the house more marketable? Who knows, I may be stuck in this house longer than I thought!

New windows would be vinyl, low-e/argon gas windows with a transferrable warranty

Thanks!
Just wanted to clarify:

Sliding glass door: $1600
3 large double hung & 3 large slider windows: $2800
Follow-up question:
Would 25% cheaper be more in line with what I should expect?
Received another quote:
$3920 for 3 double hung, 3 sliders, and a sliding glass door ($1500) OR
$4400 for 9 double hung windows, and one sliding glass door. Thoughts?

How to decorate exterior windows, space too narrow for shutters?

britcaro asked:

We are installing new (paintable vinyl) exterior shutters on windows. We have two windows that have narrow space on each side — too narrow for 7″ shutter (the smallest we’ve found so far). We have about 5″ to work with. Can we get something to “frame” these windows - vinyl strips? - that can be painted to match the new shutters, so these windows won’t look naked?
