Metal basement window frame?

February 15th, 2010
Bri asked:

I am replacing an old metal basement window with a vinyl one and I am running into a few confusing problems. 1st, the opening is only 13×31 and the smallest window I have found available is 14×32. The old window has a metal frame, but I cannot see any way for the frame to be removed. There are no screws holding it in, and it appears to be one piece. Will I have to try and cut this metal frame out with a saw? I am hoping that the new opening will accommodate the new window, but I am not sure. I am not worried about having to replace with an egress window since there is a walk-out slider near the window.

Originally, I was going to build a frame for the inside of the basement around the opening an simply set the window against the frame and secure it using the fins on a new construction window.
Now I am thinking that a replacement window set into a (hopefully) larger space from the outside is the better option. Any advice anyone?

Puppy ate blinds. Help?

February 15th, 2010
Blank asked:

My 5 month old puppy ate my vinyl or metal window blinds (Idk which kind I have). I thought he just chewed on them but then he threw up 2x and I noticed the little pieces in his vomit. Should I take him to the vet or just monitor him and take him if he gets worse? He is acting normal, running around and playing. Do you think he was able to throw all of the blinds up? Thanks

Remodeling?

February 15th, 2010
Jennifer S asked:

We have had our home for 4 years now, we only owe 11 more years on it and our payments are only 355.00 a month. We really need some work done on it. What is our best option for getting a loan to to have like vinyl siding, heating and air, new windows, those are the only things that need to be done, but all of them are so high to have done? I know nothing about this kind of stuff, some suggestions would be great.

Do your neighbors have weird decorations that drive you nuts and have to look at everyday?

February 15th, 2010
THATgirl asked:

I live in a military housing apartment building with four-pane sliding glass doors in the living room. I can see right into my kitty-corner neighbor’s 4-pane windows and she has these vertical vinyl blinds gather into four sections and tied off in the middle which makes an hour glass shape, and they’re all crooked. It drives me nuts… one of those weird annoyances I guess.

i am trying to figure out how to properly update my grandmothers windows, i am instalng new vinyl siding on her home, but it has the rattie old wood facings and i would like to cover them. All other siding jobs i have done have had new windiws with the j channel built in, so this is new to me. is there an industry standard for this application, if so what? she had the windows replaced with aluminum thermal paine about 8 years ago. but they still have the old wood trins around them

Older Home: Condensation Problem: Walls?

February 10th, 2010
David Parting asked:

I bought a 100+ year home which has electric baseboard heaters.
Throughout the winter, there was condensation on both the main story and the upstairs — especially on the walls near the ceilings. In some places it gathered and started running down the wall.
Mold has formed in one wall in the house. (roughly 1 sqft in size) Bleaching it away doesn’t help and it comes back frequently. Unfortunately I live in a cold climate, so opening the windows during the winter won’t work.
Dehumidifiers do not work, even when constantly on.
It does appear that the house suffers from a lack of insulation in the exterior walls. The windows are vinyl.

How do I stop this excessive condensation? Should I better insulate the walls? The attic? How do I know that this would help?

piratefan308 asked:

These kinds of symbols are there often shown on tshirts, car window vinyls, or tattoos.

Here’s a few examples:

I need to build an arbor? It has to be at least 95 inches high? For privacy from the neighbors?

February 8th, 2010
Wry asked:

Whose kids throw toys and stuff and make a lot of noise, and not only their kids but also they must tend other people’s kids and they’re yelling in a forgeign language and throwing stuff and trying to kick holes in our fence, and to make matters worse the neighbors’ kitchen window is high and they can look over our back yard, and I sure want to put t stop to that, etc., etc.
Yes, I need to build an arbor, and should I use vinyl or what. And bolt it all together really sturdy.
And maybe just pay someone to build it.
And then the neighbors behind us have dogs, lord have mercy. Life in the city is an awful chore.
