sound problem on desktop?

i recently reformatted my HD. Before that i had no sound problem. I loaded the driver. The sound card is part of the mother board. I have sound now but it is skipping and sounds ragged. it does not matter what or where i am. I tried a headset with it and i am still getting the skip so i know my speakers are ok. i have plenty of space on my hard drive and memory. I am at a loss as to what to do.
