Dadof4Kiddies asked:

I have a condo in southern California, I could sell it for about $400,000 as it is 1650 square feet, 3bd/2.5 ba and has a yard and 2 car garage. It is pretty much a single family home, only it does not have a front yard and it has a condo ownership.

It is not attached to any other condos and looks like a regular home.

I want to do some light remodeling like a new kitchen, update the bathrooms, and replace the doors and tear down a wall. I have already done a few home improvements like a new patio, new vinyl windows and new paint, appliances and carpet.

My whole project will cost about $33,000 including labor and materials.

My wife and I plan to stay in the house since we have paid it off and it is in a good location in California.

Is $33,000 too much to invest in my condo? I could get 400k now and its not looking so hot. My reason for the updates is not for resell but to make our home more custom so we stay happy where we are.

threesheave asked:

Is there a national code or other rules for the installation of replacement basement windows? Particularly, I’m interested in knowing if fasteners are required to attach the window frames into the concrete. I had vinyl windows installed by a contractor and they only put a small bead (1/4″) of clear silicone on three of the four faces of the existing metal frame in the concrete. No fasteners were used. Is that legal? I couldn’t find any specific code online. My city inspector was useless as well. All he told me was that as long as they didn’t change the size of the windows, he didn’t care.

Dawne

The sales man showed us the product and after estimating the cost of the project at $12,658 we decided we did not want it. So eventfully the estimate got down to $8,610 but we still didn’t want to pay that much for replacement windows. Eventfully the sales man got on the phone with the company management the price was again reduced to $5195. For this we felt like we had a deal and with the sales man in our house for four hours we wanted him to leave. We knew replacement windows were a way to raise the equity in our home which seems like a good idea but now that we have signed a contract and had time to think things over, we are suspicious. There are numerous typos in the paper work and we can not seem to find the company on the internet at all which seems strange. I need to know if any one has done business with this company and if they were satisfied with the results.

Deanna
