I just bought a home built in 1917. It needs new windows. It currently has single pane wood windows. What, in your opinion, is the best material to buy replacement windows. Vinyl, wood, or aluminum? Why do you think it is the best? Cost is a consideration also.

My three story 100 + year old victorian is sided with aluminum. Most of the windows are the original sash windows, about six feet long each with molded wood surrounds. I want to keep the surrounds and paint them but I am told that is not possible with vinyl siding. If this is true, what can I do to replace the ugly aluminum siding?

It seems to me that there is no advantage to wood windows other than the fact that they have the wood look. Vinyl windows seem to be more durable, easier to maintain, and less expensive.

So is there really any advantage to wood windows?
