Can “double hung” replacement windows be turned 90 degrees and installed as sliders?

Sherry L asked:

We have an opportunity to buy some replacement windows that was originally purchased as vinyl double hung. However, the windows will only work for our application if we turned them 90 degrees and install as slider windows.

yes, I’ve done it. keep the jam, now at the top and bottom as tight as you can or the sash will slightly rock. It’s not an optimal situation but ut does work.

NO !!!! Absolutely not! Problem one. When you unlatch the sashes they will slam open due to the balance tension. Problem two. Windows have an engineered weep system that in said configuration would be compromised. Water inside the abode would probably be frowned upon!!!!
