Do I need a permit to build a porch on the front of my house?
I love Spring! asked:
My husband and I want to build a porch on the front of our house. I was wondering if we need a permit to do that. We are also going to level out the front yard it has a tie wall that is only a couple of feet tall. Do we need a permit for that too? Also any tips on building or designing a porch would be good since we are new to this whole thing.

On a side question we also want to add new windows and vinyl siding to the house. Should we put in the windows first then the siding then the porch or should we do it in a different order? Thank you for your help.

go to your local city hall and ask what you need a permit for.they are the ones who would decide and enforce.

You would need one in my town. I would also need my plans reviewed by the zoning commission to make sure that it doesn’t stick out too far as opposed to the Servitude.

To whom it may concern , yes to be right on your question if you are hiring a contractor he should have a permit with the job he is performing. And after this job is done you also should mention to the city that you had add ons to your property other wise you will get ding in the long run for properties taxes, it helps .Good luck

Yes you need a permit.
Windows or porch first then siding (installing siding then tearing it off to install windows or the porch isn’t cost effective).
Retaining walls over 4 feet are required to be engineered. Depending on the city you may need a permit. It depends on why the wall is there. Ask at city hall.

It really depends upon the municipality that you live in. Usually, for small patios, the building department isn’t going to care. For tie walls, so long as the wall isn’t holding up a structure, the building department won’t care about that either.
Siding and windows for a house usually comes under the scope of remodeling, and building departments may or may not require a permit.
The best thing to do is go down to your local building department, sit with a plans examiner, and discuss what you want to do, and if a permit is required for the work.

In the county i live in you have to have a permit for anything over 200 sq. ft. check your local building codes at your courthouse. put windows in first less problems later

Anything that involves an exit, like your front door, will
require a permit.
If the tie wall is for retaining soil slip, that’s a permit as well.
Since the porch must be anchored to the structure, you’d be
better off getting that done first so the new siding will protect the joint.
