I want to permanently install a window air conditioner unit. The fit needs to be air-tight?

Ms. Fixit asked:

Window is standard size, vinyl replacement. I’d like to permanently install 1 unit in a 2nd floor bedroom and another unit in the 1st floor breakfast room. I do not want to have to remove these units at the end of the summer and I want to insure that an intruder cannot push the unit in to enter my home. Thanks!

After installing the normal way, you can put angle irons over the unit, bolted top and bottom to prevent easy removal and also use a spray foam sealant all around the seal of the window to AC unit.

Short of taking one of the window sections out and making a good 3/4″ plywood piece to fit around the A/C unit, I can’t think of any other way. If you’re looking for security as well as cooling, you’ll want to screw the plywood, (which should be treated), to the upper sill to make it permanent. Then caulk around the outer edges and it should be tight enough. I made a similar set-up for a window in my shop many years ago and it’s still there. It wasn’t so much for security, as it was to replace the sill I took out that simply fell apart.

just install like normal seal around then go to your local burgaler alarm store and ask for new stickers like the ones that say “this home secured by brinks” put them everywhere and only an idiot would try to break in. if you have them and they want in that bad it wont matter they will find a way. good luck

Our air conditioners are screwed to the frame and the chalked around. Which is about as permanent as they really get. I would be more concerned with some one breaking through a window without a conditioner that going through the trouble of trying to get through a heavy unit. But that my just be me.
