Should I tip the contractor?
nachosmyman asked:
I just had a bunch of work done on my house…new roof, vinyl siding, gutters, shed, new windows. Should I tip the contractor or buy him a thank you gift? I know he made a ton of money on it. Would this be too personal or make him uncomfortable? I have been working with him for 2 months. What do you think?

My dad is a contractor….you are correct when you say the guy just made a ton of money on your house….That in itself is enough. Contractors are happy to get your business, and their business is making money….He’s happy enough. If you really feel compelled to let him know just how happy you are with the job, a card of appreciation would be a nice gesture, perhaps with a gift card to Lowes or Home Depot…some place he could use it towards another work project, but by all means do not feel obligated to get him anything. It’s not a job that needs tips to show you liked their service. Good Luck!

Good question. This has turned into a world where everyone expects to be tipped. Maybe this contractor would tip you for giving him referrals? Maybe $25 for anyone that hires him on your recommendation. If you really want to tip, I suggest a gift card to a restaurant.

The best thing you can give him are referrals, that’s how he will stay in business and make more $$, you can also let him know that he can have potential customers contact you. Tell everyone you know what a great job he did and then he should give you a small discount next time he does work for you.

The best tip you can give him is referrals. Ask him for business cards so that you can pass them to friends & neighbors who need work done. The gesture of asking for his card will be a compliment in itself.
