what is the best way to put polyfilm plastic around your windows on the outside for the winter?
Royce B asked:
I have a double wide manufactured home in northwest wisconsin and looking for ways to make the windows more weatherproof for winter. I want to put plastic around the outside of the windows and am not sure how to do it with vinyl siding. Do I have to take off the vinyl trim around the window frames? Is it possible without taking off the siding or cutting anything. I can’t put the plastic film on the inside because the old lady says she don’t want the tape peeling off the finish because we tried it last year. do i need to ask the manufacturer how to get the vinyl trim off from around the windows in order to staple the plastic on? Are there other ways?

What tape did you use that messed up the finish? You could use masking tape or painter’s tape, the blue stuff, on the inside. That won’t hurt the finish.

we own a manufactured home as well and live in wisconsin. my husband made storm windows that fit in the space in between the outside and inside windows. what he did is make a fame using the exact measurements of the inside space out of 1×1 pine and we bought heavy vinyl from wal-mart in the fabric section, it is cheaper than other places at 90 cents a yard and it is clear so we can see out of the windows (people use this stuff to cover table clothes with). he stapled it onto the wood leaving a good 6 inches sticking out and attached heavy duty velcro to it. once he has them in the windows he attached it to the otherside of the velcro he had place on the inside cassing (not sure of the specific name) and ta da…done. it takes a bit more work in the begining but won’t wreck our siding or our windows and the best part it it is reusable! we have have our going on 4 yrs now
